Nokia News

Nokia have announced that sales were up year on year in the first quarter of 2011, but that profits were down. It’s been a rollercoaster couple of years for the Finnish mobile phone giants, as they have struggled to get the best out of the smart phone concept. At a time of  cheap mobile contracts and more and more people owning phones this has been a key year for all the big phone companys. There have been some definite low points but also some real highs, including the release of the Nokia N8 last year; a great smart phone that features one of the best – if not the very best – camera on the market. This phone has certainly helped Nokia over the last few months and is one of the reasons for there being more sales in the first three months of 2011 than there were at the end of 2010.

The beginning of this year has also been a tumultuous period for Nokia though, with the announcement that they will soon be partnering up with Microsoft to make Windows 7 Phone their main operating system. This was taken by many to signal the end for the Symbian OS, their previous number one platform. Nokia have done their best to squash these thoughts though and have launched two new Symbian phones this month to plenty of applause. Nokia have lauded their “solid” Q1 results but have stated they expect to see more in the spring and summer months.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said: ‘In the first quarter, we shifted from defining our strategy to executing our strategy. On this front, I am pleased to report that we signed our definitive agreement with Microsoft and already our product design and engineering work is well under way.

‘Following a solid first quarter, we expect a more challenging second quarter. However, we are encouraged by our roadmap of mobile phones and Symbian smartphones, which we will ship through the balance of the year. We are fully focused on delivering the needed accountability, speed and results to positively drive our future financial performance.’ For more infomation on the latest Nokias and to buy your own head over to dialaphone today.
